Anecdotal history:
After 15 successful years of Fiat spider sales, the 124 spider was due for another change. Fiat decided to hand over the complete production and sales process to Pininfarina, who had participated in the production all along. The big difference was that Pininfarina would now exclusively sell the car. With this change the car was now to be sold in Europe again after being available only in North America for many years. In addition to several cosmetic changes aimed at targeting the car more upmarket some minor mechanical changes were also made.
The best part of the story however is the idea to produce the ultimate version being tuned by the Abarth team. It appears that at least two cars were built to be shown to market the special Abarth model; one in the traditional Abarth red and another in black as shown in the Photo Gallery. These cars had more Abarth badging than the eventual production cars. The production cars were also only available in red or black body color however not the bright red of the prototype.
